Blogmas Day 22: Fantastic Beasts and where to find them review
i literally got back from watching "Fantastic Beasts and where to find them" about an hour ago which is why this blog post is up a little later that usual. I thought that I would share with you my view of the film and so obviously I'm warning you now that it will contain some spoilers so TURN BACK (if you haven't watched it yet)!
So a little back story. I grew up with the Harry Potter films but haven't actually read the books so some may say I'm a fake fan. I do love the story though with a passion and have always loved the magical world they live in and the fact it is in our everyday world... But most of us don't know about it. It's such a gorgeous storyline (in the beginning atleast) and I actually just love all the characters. My favourites probably being; Dobby, Snape, Neville and Luna (to name just a few) and of course the 3 main stars.
I walked into the film with not much hope for this new film entering the wizards for world though I'm afraid. I was worried because Harry Potter has always been a very British film and didn't want America ruining the whole thing. Luckily for me though the whole story line hardly touched the original plot as they were Infact in New York the whole time.
Now is when I get very critical in my film analysis, please don't hate me too much.
The positives were that the graphics were amazing and I absolutely loved all the creatures and their little homes in Mr Scamanders suitcase. I though the sheer size of it was a bit over the top at first but it does add an element of sweetness and adds to the fact that Newt is trying to save and protect them. The beasts themselves were very creative (and some of them were awfully cute too) and I loved the fact that each one had their own weaknesses (Niffler - stealing shiny things). I especially loved Pickett the Bowtruckle who has attachment issues and is treated like Newts son. Although the Bowtruckles did remind me of groot from Guardians of the Galaxy but that's probably just because they're both plants.
One thing I didn't like about the film was the love story between Newt Scamanders and Porpetunia Goldstein. I found it unnecessary when we already had the adorable relationship between Queenie and Jacob (which I did like). I think I would've preferred them to remain "work" friends instead of the awkward flirting at the end of the film. The problem is that Hollywood find it hard to believe that they can create a film with two characters of opposite gender and not have them fall in "love". What is Newt was gay? Hmmm? Maybe this is just me being picky because I think Eddie Redmayne is just amazing (even though he plays the same part in every film - another bad trait of Hollywood actors).
This was just me quick review of the film I watched. Overall od rate it 6.5 or 7/10 because it was a fine film but wasn't really my cup of tea. But to be fair to them, following Harry Potter will never be an easy task for anyone. I think they accomplished their aims of the film and just hope that the story gets a bit more exciting as they continue the films (which lets face it they defo will) because if I'm honest I was not leaning at the edge of my seat even though there were some shocks and reveals (more like Scooby Doo reveals than Star Wars though).
Of course these are just my own opinions and of course I may have been a bit harsh in places but I included both positives and negatives. If you would like to offer your own views on the story or film please do feel free to.
